Your Intuition Isn’t Broken
At the risk of sounding repetitive or elementary, I feel compelled to describe how your intuition may actually be speaking to you.
A Gentle Note Before We Begin
This piece is not here to shame, diagnose, or call anyone out—especially you.
If something lands with a little sting or discomfort, consider it information, not an accusation. Growth opportunities often arrive with a raised eyebrow, a gut check, and then—if we’re lucky—a soft laugh and a moment of curiosity.
(If you felt that eyebrow lift just now, welcome. You’re in the right room.)
The messaging around intuition can make it feel like a one size fits all experience. As though there is one mystical origin point and if you cannot locate it, you must be doing it all wrong. If you keep searching for your intuition in one single magical place, it is no wonder you may begin to feel inept at receiving and eventually stop trusting yourself.
The truth is that the source of your intuitive voice is often a moving target of information.
The good news is that at any given time, in any given circumstance, you have a dominant way that your intuition transmits guidance to you. It has a language, a preferred channel, an energetic interactive flight map.
For some people, the language of intuition shows up as images or previews in the mind’s eye. It may be a memory or symbolic scene that pops in from seemingly nowhere, something that makes no logical sense but somehow lands. This language is clairvoyance, or clear seeing, and it can sometimes feel like imagination. The difference is that it is unusually accurate imagination. Think synchronicities showing up as repeating images, numbers, animals, or symbols in your physical world.
For others, intuition sounds like something. It is an inner voice that drops a phrase, a song lyric, a name, or a single word into your awareness, unconsciously and calmly. Clairaudience, or clear hearing, rarely arrives as a booming, God like voice from the clouds. We are not Evan Almighty, after all. It is usually subtle and steady, sometimes easy to dismiss. A word that catches your attention, or as I like to call it ear-tention, through a song, an audiobook, a podcast.
Intuition can also show up without any visual or audio data at all. It arrives simply as a knowing. A quiet certainty that is often hard to trust because there is no evidence and no reasoning, just confident wisdom that appears like an invisible download from the Universe. This is claircognizance, or clear knowing. It can be confusing because there is no tangible experience to point to for validation. The claircognizant just knows.
And then there is clairsentience, or clear feeling. This language is felt in the body. Physical sensations in the chest, stomach, back, or neck. A tingle, warmth, contraction, flutter, or unexplained tension. It speaks through emotions that do not feel entirely like yours and can easily be mislabeled as anxiety. Clairsentience can be hard to translate into clear guidance, and yet if you are paying attention, it is a well of information that is repeatable and reliable.
It is important to understand that no clair is more intuitive than the others. None of them mean you are gifted or not gifted. None of them offer more or less clarity. None of them carry more weight in your decision making.
But here is the important part.
None of them interact clearly with you when your system is in protection mode.
If you have ever followed what you thought was intuitive guidance and ended up saying, “Welp, that was a huge mistake,” it might be time to stop asking, “Why can’t I trust myself?” and instead ask, “What state am I in when I think I am listening?”
“Just trust your intuition” is another catchphrase that sounds deeply wise, elevated, and simple. It leans into the universal truth that your intuition is a flawless GPS tuned into your absolute true north, meant to lead you toward all the yumminess and goodness that is truly meant for you in this lifetime with ease and joy. Yaaaassssss. This is the biggest truth.
But there is an invisible monkey wrench. Dunt dunt daaaa.
Your ability to converse with your intuition has a three brain problem.
Most people understand that a regulated nervous system is important for a calm and elevated life experience, but many do not know about the three brain dynamic. Now that you understand your intuition speaks through unique languages, the next step is recognizing that as it moves through your body, it also moves through translation filters in what is loosely called the three brains.
The head brain handles thoughts, images, prediction, and narrative.
The heart brain processes emotions, attachment, and values.
The gut brain governs instinct, safety, and survival.
Your intuition can get lost in translation when your brains are focused on protection rather than connection and reception.
Ideally, your three brains are in harmonic conversation at all times.
Sometimes, though, they act more like a group chat where one is typing in all caps, another is using wildly inappropriate emojis, and the third has ghosted the conversation entirely.
When these brains are primed for connection though, intuition feels clear, grounded, and calm.
Things get messy when any, or all, are primed for protection. When that happens, intuition can go quiet, even silent, and everything else like your wounded self, ego, armoured self, dysregulated nervous system, becomes louder, more urgent, and very convincing.
Now, before you run off to get an exorcism on your default protection modes, keep in mind that these strategies should not be villainized. They are intelligent, fast, and protective in all the best ways when safety is genuinely lacking.
The problem is not that protection exists.
The problem is that you often mistake the messages from this protective state for your intuition.
Take a look at the diagram above.
What you are looking at is a map of what happens with your intuitive messaging when your brains are calmly connected and when they are chaotically protected.
On the outer edges of each circle, you will notice the protective drives and how each brain transmits information to your intuitive receptors, also known as your clairs or intuitive language.
The Head Brain, when primed for protection, is driven by logic, rigidity, and rationality. It tightens because it craves certainty. It demands proof. It wants to run the numbers twelve times, create a spreadsheet about your feelings, and then run a double blind study to test each hypothesis. When protection is leading here, intuition gets overridden by analysis. You are no longer intuiting, you are managing risk.
The Heart Brain, when primed for protection, is driven by desire, craving, and pleasure. It wants safety through connection even if it is less than optimal. It wants relief. It wants the attachment to stay intact at all costs. In this state, intuition can get tangled up with longing and neediness. Strong emotion feels like guidance, but sometimes it is simply the fear of losing love or belonging. In protection mode, the heart brain can drop quickly into a worthiness trap.
The Gut Brain, when primed for protection, is driven by survival, hypervigilance, and defense. This is the fastest brain. It scans for danger before you even consciously register it. When the gut brain is primed for protection, anxiety and urgency can feel like intuition. The knot of fear in your gut can feel like butterflies and your pounding heart can be mistaken for excitement. Your body is not trying to mislead you. It is trying to keep you safe.
Now look toward the center of the diagram where the circles overlap.
That inner space represents what becomes available when the brains are primed for connection and ready for reception.
Between the Head and Heart, you see Wise Mind. This is where logic and emotion cooperate instead of compete. It is clarity without demanding. Feeling without flooding. Leading without overwhelming.
Between the Head and Gut, you see a Regulated Nervous System. This is critical for the body to feel safe enough to trust the guidance. In this connected state, the mind does not have to over analyze, control outcomes, or second guess information. You have more bandwidth to think clearly because you are not constantly scanning for threats.
Between the Heart and Gut lives Emotional IQ. This is when sensation and emotion become data rather than overwhelm. You can feel deeply without feeling hijacked. What you desire no longer feels like coping or spiritual bypassing. Feelings of pleasure feel completely in line with your compelling vision.
And at the very center, where all three overlap, sits your Inner Wisdom.
This is your intuition in its most integrated form. It is not dramatic or urgent, reactive or fearful. It is simple, symmetrical and integrated.
When the brains are primed for connection, intuition flows through the overlaps. It is supported by logic instead of shut down by it. It is informed by emotion instead of dismissed by it. It is grounded in the body instead of being paralyzed by it.
When the brains are primed for protection though, the signal gets filtered at the outer edges. Logic becomes rigid. Emotion becomes grasping. Instinct becomes hypervigilant. And we can mistake those protective reactions for intuitive truth.
Intuition does not live in one brain. It lives in a state of connection and the integration of three brains.
And integration only happens when your system feels safe enough to allow it.
So if your intuition ever again feels inconsistent, confusing, or unreliable, it is likely not that your intuition is broken. It is almost surely because one or all of your brains are primed for protection and have been working overtime to keep you safe.
Protection mode is not a flaw. It is evidence that your system cares deeply about your safety and survival.
Nothing has gone wrong.
Your system did exactly what it was designed to do.
The work is not to delete protection mode. It is to recognize when you are primed for it and to gently create enough connection that protection no longer needs to lead.
When safety increases, integration becomes possible. When integration becomes possible, intuition becomes clear. And when intuition becomes clear, trust quietly rebuilds itself.
Because your intuition is not missing.
It is waiting for safety.
